Devotees out on harinām typically carry a selection of Śrīla Prabhupāda's hardback books for distribution, and will tell you what donation is typical or suitable for each title.
If your desire to read is strong but a donation would be a hardship — please don't hesitate to ask. Books can also be given as gifts. The point is for the books to reach you.
A library on the holy names
His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda left behind, in essence, a superhuman dissertation on the holy names of God — in the form of his elucidating translations of, and detailed purports to, the great Vaiṣṇava scriptures: Bhagavad-gītā As It Is, Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta.
These are not casual translations. Each verse is given in Devanāgarī, then in Roman transliteration, then word-for-word, then in plain English — followed by a purport drawing out its meaning from the perspective of one who has lived the practice. The Bhāgavatam alone runs to eighteen hardback volumes; the Caitanya-caritāmṛta, to seventeen. A lifetime of study.
The big works — worth collecting in hardback
The Gītā, the Bhāgavatam, and the Caitanya-caritāmṛta reward physical ownership. A hardback Bhāgavatam set on the shelf is something you live with — flip through, return to, lend, read aloud, hand down. The bindings are made to last decades. The illustrations are meant to be looked at on paper, not scrolled past on a screen.
Two main lineages of edition are in circulation today. The current BBT editions — published by the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, which Śrīla Prabhupāda established in 1972 — are widely available, well-bound, and what most temples and saṅkīrtana devotees distribute. The original complete 1972 Macmillan editions — produced under Śrīla Prabhupāda's personal supervision during his lifetime — are especially prized by collectors and by devotees who want the texts exactly as they were first published.

Bhagavad-gītā As It Is as Śrīla Prabhupāda first published it under Macmillan — sought by collectors and by those who want the unedited first printing.
The smaller books — readable online
Beyond the big translations, Śrīla Prabhupāda wrote dozens of smaller books — paperbacks and pamphlets, mostly under two hundred pages, each opening one door into the philosophy or the practice.

The full Śrīla Prabhupāda corpus — books, lectures, letters, conversations — is searchable for free at vedabase.io (Bhaktivedanta VedaBase).
For the smaller books listed above, the Vedabase versions can serve as reasonable replacements for the physical paperbacks. For the big translations — the Gītā, the Bhāgavatam, the Caitanya-caritāmṛta — the Vedabase is a brilliant companion to the hardbacks, but not a replacement.
A searchable database is a tool; a hardback Bhāgavatam on your shelf is a relationship. Use each as it's meant to be used.
